Ball Horticultural Company is the global leader in the breeding, production and distribution of ornamental horticulture products. For our location of Star Roses and Plants in West Grove the Ball Helix Cell Biology Team is searching for an innovative expert in plant cellular and reproductive biology to drive research initiatives that will ultimately help bring new and exciting products to the market. Essential components of our next generation innovation strategy include investments in our team and the design, build out, and management of a best in class Ball Helix Innovation Center.
Key Responsibilities: - Conduct activities that require specialized knowledge and the broad application of cell biology techniques e.g. embryo rescue, ploidy manipulation, mutation, pollen management, somatic hybridization, induction of doubled haploids, cytogenetics, reproductive biology and tissue culture techniques
- Collaborate with breeders and fellow team scientists about the cell biology needs of specific crops in accelerating the breeding process
- Proactively plan, design, coordinate and implement research plans for specific crops or projects according the strategy
- Use in-depth knowledge cell biology for the continuous discovery and development of technologies, procedures, and products
- Develop work plans and drive execution by monitoring project progress
- Take initiative in keeping current with literature in areas of assignment
- Report updates to research team and breeders
- Assume supervisory responsibility as needed
Requirements
Requirements - Ph.D./M.S. in plant biology, cell biology or related field and/or at least 5 years of progressive responsibilities in cell biology
- Familiar with a wide range of cell biology techniques e.g. embryo rescue, ploidy manipulation, mutation, pollen management, somatic hybridization, induction of doubled haploids, cytogenetics, reproductive biology and tissue culture techniques
- Ability to solve problems through deductive reasoning and the application of scientific principles
- Capable of design and interpretation of scientific experiments
- Ability to manage multiple projects
- Demonstrated project management skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team is important
- Possess effective interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to focus on meeting the needs of internal customers
- Enabling of statistics is key
- Familiar with breeding concepts
- Willingness and capacity to learn and acquire relevant new skill sets
- Encourages diverse thinking to promote and nurture innovation
- Seeks ways to improve processes, from small tweaks to complete reengineering

Physical Requirements: - Ability to Lift/Carry 50 lbs 5% of the day
- Ability to push/pull 50 lbs 5% of the day
- Ability to sit/stand 80% of the day
- Ability to kneel/bend 10% of the day
- Ability to reach 10% of the day
- Ability to use hands/fingers 100% of the day
- Ability to work in laboratory, greenhouse, and/or office, for 100% of the day
